Overview
Project planning is at the heart of the project life cycle. The planning phase is when the project plans are documented, the project deliverables and requirements are defined, and the project schedule is created. It involves creating a set of plans to help guide the project team through the implementation and closure phases of the project. The plans created during this phase will help the team manage time, cost, quality, changes, risk, and related issues. They will also help control staff and external suppliers to ensure that the project is delivered on time, within budget, and within schedule.
The primary purpose of the project planning phase is to:
- Establish business requirements
- Establish cost, schedule, list of deliverables, and delivery dates
- Establish resources plans
- Obtain management approval and proceed to the next phase
In order to fulfill the purposes outlined above, the project team should have the necessary capacity and competency to establish business requirements that drive the cost and schedule. They should also be able to establish resource plans to ensure sufficient resources are made available for the project. The activities above require competencies that need to be acquired.
