PMP® Qualification RequirementsExplained!

Want to take on the Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification Examination, but unsure if you qualify? PMI’s flagship project management certification course is rapidly gaining popularity in Malaysia. However, there are certain requirements that need to be fulfilled before a candidate is able to sit for the PMP examination.

The PMP qualification requirements can be broken down into three segments, namely education, experience and training.

The Requirements

Education: The minimum requirement in order to take on the PMP examination is a high school diploma (i.e. SPM Certification) or a degree.

Experience: Candidates must show they have had prior experience in actively working within projects. If a candidate possesses a high school diploma or college diploma, they require at least 5 years of project management work experience within the past 8 years. If they possess a university degree, they will only need to prove they have 3 years project management work experience within the last 8 years.

This work experience must be non-overlapping. If the duration between projects are overlapping, the overlapping period will only be considered once.

For example, if a candidate was involved in Project A from January 2023 to May 2023 (5 months) and Project B from February 2023 to July 2023 (5 months), that candidate will be deemed to 7 months experience (January to July 2023) as opposed to the 10 months of work experience if the total duration for both projects are added up.

Your project descriptions must include the project title, start and end date, and a high level summary of the course objective and outcome. It should also include your specific involvement in each stage of the project (Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitoring and Control, Closing).

Training: The final requirement is obtaining 35 contact hours of project management education or training. This can be obtained a variety of ways. One of the more common methods is to take on a PMP Certification Preparation course with an Authorized Training Partner (ATP) in Malaysia.

Do take note however that current holders of the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) qualification are exempt from this requirement and do not have to collect the 35 contact hours.
