Exploring the Implement Phase of aScrum Framework
A complex project that uses the Scrum framework will go through multiple phases. The Implement phase in the Scrum framework begins after the Plan and Estimate phase. This phase can be applied in any industry. The goal of the Implement phase is to create something that can deliver value to the customers and the organization. This is done by transforming the product backlog items (PBIs) into a potentially shippable increment of the product.
Let's imagine we are building a new video game using the Scrum framework.
In the Plan and Estimate phase, the developers decide what things they want to work on in a short period of time called a "sprint." It's like having a small goal for a little while. They make a plan and decide what parts of the game they will work on during this time.
In the Implement phase of Scrum, it's like putting all the pieces together to make the game. It's when the game developers start creating the actual game that you can play.
During the Implement phase, the team members discuss their progress since the last meeting, their plans for the day, and any potential impediments they are facing. This event is known as the Daily Scrum. This helps in maintaining transparency and keeping everyone aligned. The emergent process and work must be visible to those performing the work as well as those receiving the work. Transparency enables inspection. Inspection without transparency is misleading and wasteful.
Then, the developers start building the game. They write the code, create the characters, design the levels, and make everything work together. It's like building a big puzzle where everything has to fit just right.
As they work, they test the game to make sure it's fun to play and everything works correctly. They fix any problems they find along the way, like if a character is not moving properly or if there are any errors in the game. The team follows Agile principles and best practices to ensure the quality and effectiveness of their work.
When the developers have met a certain criteria known as the “Done” criteria, they will show it to the Product Owner and the other stakeholders in the next phase. Throughout the Implement phase, the Product Backlog will be refined. The development team, together with the product owner, continually refines the product backlog items that are not yet implemented. This includes working on new parts of the game, adding more features and fixing any bugs that players find. It's like an ongoing process of making the game better and better. This is known as Product Backlog Grooming.
At the end of the implement phase, The development team strives to create a potentially shippable increment of the product during each sprint. The increment represents the work completed by the team during the sprint and should meet the definition of "Done" agreed upon by the team. The increment is then integrated with previous increments to create a potentially releasable product.
To summarize, the Implement phase of Scrum is when the game developers work together to build the game, test it, get feedback, and make it the best game it can be. It's like making a cool video game step by step!
