What Project Managers Need
to Succeed in 2025?

Is Efficiency, Agility, & Sustainability enough?

Project management expertise is crucial to sustain Malaysian competitiveness in key industries such as IT, construction, engineering, and corporate business. Malaysian government led initiatives such as MyDigital Blueprint and IR4.0 (Fourth Industrial Revolution) can and will impact major multi-million-dollar infrastructure projects in the pipeline. With intense competition from other countries, the need for local companies to manage projects better has never been so acute.

Beyond 2025, more locally trained professional project managers will be required. Equipped with project management best practices, they will be expected to increasingly optimize dwindling resources, navigate rapid technological complexity and accommodate evolving environmental priorities.

Optimizing dwindling resources will require increasing levels of efficiency, navigating rapid technological complexity will require enhanced agility, and accommodating evolving environmental priorities will be possible through higher exposure to sustainability.

Hence, the need for project management professionals to balance maintaining efficiency, complexity and sustainability to deliver sustainable business value will take precedence. Hence, the key imperatives for project managers moving forward may be categorized as meeting the efficiency imperative, the agility imperative and the sustainability imperative.

Efficiency imperative

With intense competition for human and physical resources in the horizon, the need to achieve more with fewer resources is critical. Allocating resources efficiently, optimizing workflows, and leveraging technology to improve productivity must take center stage. This will require skill sets and commitment to optimize resources and workflow by assigning the right people and tools to the right tasks at the right time.

To do so, adoption of new technologies such as Internet of Things, IOT, Artificial Intelligence, AI and Big Data Analytics will necessitate upskilling project management expertise. In the interim period, access to such expertise, through virtual communication will require investment in latest technology to ensure seamless transfer of knowledge and expertise across different time horizons. This will be required to meet the efficiency imperative required to optimize resources.

Agility Imperative

Adapting to the ever-evolving technological landscape demands project managers to engage in continuous learning and adaptation. The need to sense changing needs and requirements must be complemented with the ability to respond appropriately to that change. This will involve understanding not only how to use new technologies but also why they are being used and how to strategically integrate them into project workflows.

Assessing the value of new technologies and make informed decisions about which tools to implement as new challenges unfold is a key agility imperative in this regard. This requires a critical eye and an understanding how to adapt to changing needs of each project in a timely and agile manner.

Sustainability Imperative

Organizations are increasingly prioritizing sustainability, requiring project managers to embed environmental and social considerations into every stage of the project lifecycle. This will involve understanding sustainability frameworks, setting green project goals and measuring environmental impact of projects being undertaken.

The above calls for increasing project managers exposure to sustainability concerns that will entail meeting the sustainability imperative that is expected to make significant impacts on the overall project management ecosystem beyond 2025.

In conclusion, Malaysian project managers will face a complex and evolving landscape from 2025 onwards. They will be forced to embrace changes through continuous learning, adapt to new technologies, and developing sustainability-based project management competencies to successfully navigate these challenges and deliver successful projects in the years to come.
