The Complete 2026 Guide to PMP® Certification Requirements in Malaysia

By Dr Rumesh Kumar

Note: This guide has been updated to reflect the latest PMI guidelines for the July 2026 exam rollout. Notably, PMI has extended the project experience submission window, allowing candidates to submit experience from the past 10 years (previously 8 years).

Getting PMP® certified is one of the most powerful moves you can make for your project management career, leading to higher salaries and better job opportunities. But let's be honest: the PMP® requirements can be confusing

'Do I have enough experience?' 'What if my projects overlap?' 'What does SPM-level entry mean?'

In this 2026 guide, we will simplify everything. We'll break down the exact requirements for you in the Malaysian context, so you can be 100% confident when you submit your application."

PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification course requires participants to demonstrate that they have actively worked within the project management industry.

There are three paths that are provided by PMI® to qualify for the PMP® examination. They are:

Path A

Path B

Path C

Highest Academic Qualification

Degree

High School Diploma (i.e. SPM or equivalent)

Degree from a GAC Accredited University

Project Management Working Experience

3 years

5 years

2 years

Project Management Education

35 Contact Hours of Project Management Education

There are nuances to each of these requirements. We shall detail each requirement individually below.

Project Management Working Experience

PMI® does not require PMP® candidates to have the title of ‘Project Manager’, or necessarily work in the ‘Project Management Department’ within an organization. Any job title and function is usable in order to qualify for the PMP® examination.

What is crucial is that PMP® candidates can demonstrate that they were responsible for leading projects. A degree holder on Path A will need to prove they have 3 years experience in leading projects. SPM or equivalent holders on Path B must prove they have 5 years experience. A GAC degree holder on Path C will require 2 years experience.

These projects must be from the past 10 years. If there are overlapping projects (i.e. two projects that you are leading at the same time), the duration can only be considered once.

To illustrate the point, please see some examples below:

Candidate A: Mr Lim

Candidate B: En Mohd Ishak

Mr Lim is has a Masters Degree and works for a Construction Firm. He has led two major projects.

En Mohd Ishak holds an SPM certificate. He has led 3 major IT infratructure projects.

Work Experience:

Project 1: April 2020 – May 2022

(25 months)

Project 2: July 2020 – July 2021
(12 months)

Work Experience:

Project 1: May 2012 – June 2014 (26 months)

Project 2: January 2020 – January 2024 (48 months)

Project 3: May 2023 – February 2025 (22 months)

Whilst these projects add up to more than 3 years, Mr Lim still does not qualify for the PMP® examination as Project 2’s duration is overlapping with Project 1.

Project #1 is too distant to be considered, PMI® only considers projects that take place in the last 10 years. There is also an overlap of project durations for Mr Ishak for projects #2 and #3. However, even if we do not consider the overlapping period as two separate projects, we can still consider the non overlapping portion of project #3. Therefore, he has 4 years experience in project #2 (January 2020 – January 2024), supplemented with 1 additional non overlapping year experience in project #3 (February 2024 – February 2025)

What is a Project?

For the purposes of qualifying for the PMP® examination, PMI®’s definition of projects will need to be taken into consideration. As per the PMI Lexicon of Project Management Terms, “A project is a temporary initiative in a unique context undertaken to create value.”

The definition of project for the purposes of the exam application is therefore a wide one, where projects that were performed in the predictive, adaptive or hybrid methodologies will apply.

Common examples of projects can include the development of a process, service or product. This can be the construction of an office building, upgrade of internal accounting software, developing a new process for staff onboarding or creating a marketing campaign.

Project Management Education

The final requirement for all candidates is to complete 35 contact hours of formal project management education.

The easiest and most reliable way to get this is by enrolling in an exam preparation course from a PMI® Authorized Training Partner (ATP). As an ATP, our course not only fulfills the 35-hour requirement but also provides you with official PMI®-approved materials and a clear study plan to ensure you pass on your first attempt.
